7 Signs Your Mattress Is Done (And It’s Not Just Your Back)

Most people keep their mattress years longer than they should. The tricky part? Mattresses don’t break all at once — they fade slowly, so you adjust without noticing. Here’s how to tell if yours has quietly given up.

1. You wake up sore or stiff

If your back, neck, or hips ache in the morning but loosen up during the day, your mattress is the prime suspect. A worn mattress stops supporting your spine’s natural alignment, and your muscles work overtime all night to compensate.

2. There’s a visible dip or sag

Strip the sheets and look. If you can see a body-shaped indentation where you sleep — generally anything deeper than about an inch and a half — the support layers have broken down. No topper fixes this; it’s structural.

3. You sleep better somewhere else

This is the giveaway most people ignore. If you sleep noticeably better in a hotel, on a friend’s couch, or anywhere that isn’t your bed, your mattress is the problem, not you.

4. It’s 7 to 10 years old

Most mattresses last 7 to 10 years depending on quality and materials. Past the 8-year mark, even a mattress that “feels fine” has lost meaningful support. If you can’t remember when you bought it, that’s your answer.

5. It’s lumpy, noisy, or both

Lumps mean the comfort layers have shifted or clumped. Creaking or squeaking (in spring mattresses) means the coils are wearing out. Either way, the mattress is telling you it’s done.

6. Your allergies got worse

Old mattresses accumulate dust mites, dead skin, and allergens over the years — even with a protector. If you’re waking up congested or sneezy and it improves when you travel, your mattress may be the culprit.

7. Your partner’s movements wake you up

Motion isolation degrades as materials wear. If you used to sleep through your partner rolling over and now every toss wakes you, the mattress has lost its ability to absorb movement.

So… replace it or keep it?

If you nodded along to two or more of these, it’s probably time. But “probably” isn’t a decision — run the numbers. Our mattress calculator uses the 8-year rule plus what you’re actually experiencing to give you a clear replace it or keep it verdict in about a minute.
